Digital India Mission

Digital India Mission

The Digital India Mission initiative was launched by the Government of India on 1st July 2015. The purpose of the mission is the digitalization of governance mechanisms, services, and creating digital infrastructure. It is a futuristic step towards well-organized e-governance. The aim is also to spread digital literacy in urban and rural areas. Many other government programs like Startup India, Make In India, IPDS, etc are benefitted from the digitization of procedures from application to allocation.

Objectives 

  • To enable socio-economic change through technology.
  • To empower citizens with digitalization through technological platform usage & digital literacy.
  • To create a system of e-governance and services.
  • To prepare for a paperless future of governance.
  • To reduce paperwork and time related to government scheme implementation and monitoring.
  • To create digital identity of citizens with other digital details that cannot be lost.
  • To make financial transactions digital and hence cashless.
  • To retain better accountability and evidence of all financial transactions.
  • To provide documents and storage space in the cloud for all citizens
  • To create workflow automation for the smooth functioning of government departments and activities

Nine Pillars of Digital India Mission

Broadway Highway: This program would include laying the network infrastructure in villages, and cities. Also, it would be responsible for providing high-speed internet connection throughout the country. The cloud platform of the Government Departments would also be integrated and managed through this program.

Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity: This program includes the spreading of mobile connections and networks in rural areas and covering those areas where there are network gaps. The Nodal department responsible is DoT.

Public Internet access: In this, the CSC coverage is expanded and all delivery service points are brought under the ambit of a good connectivity system.

E-Governance: This includes the digitization of government procedures and services especially payment gateways and other processes. Also, this helps in creating an electronic database for Government Depts.

E-Kranti: This program includes electronic delivery of service in sectors such as education, healthcare, justice, security, etc.

 Information for all: This program seeks to provide a digital platform for dissemination of information for citizens and Government. It also helps in having easy access to the dataset.

Electronics Manufacturing: This is an ambitious program to strengthen the use of technology required for digitization. It includes the manufacturing of products like set-top boxes, healthcare equipment, mobiles, etc.

IT for Jobs: This program undertakes the task of IT related training to be imparted for citizens in rural areas, telecom, and service delivery providers in villages and towns.

Early Harvest Programmes: It is concerned with keeping biometric attendance in all Central Government offices, IT led mass messaging and greetings.

Details of the Mission

  • It has helped create services like UMANG, Digital Locker, E-Sampark.
  • Under the Bharat Net program, at least 1.15 lakh Panchayats have been covered and connected.
  • There has been a sharp increase in electronic financial transactions.
  • At least there are 300 million internet daily users who have grown fast due to IT awareness and usage.
  • Digital literacy programs like Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan aims to speed mass IT awareness in rural areas.
